Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (CEPCO), one of the largest companies in the electricity sector in Japan, visited INESC TEC to learn about the solutions that the Institute has been developing and the ongoing projects in power and energy systems – focusing on solutions for the energy transition. The delegation, accompanied by AICEP Portugal Global – Trade & Investment Agency, also visited INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles.
The agenda of the visit included a presentation about INESC TEC, and the work developed by the Centre for Power and Energy Systems, as well as a set of projects and technological solutions aimed at decarbonisation, simulation of energy systems and planning, storage systems, smart grids, microgrids, network interoperability and flexibility, AC/DC hybrid networks, etc.
The team shared the work developed within national and European projects like InterConnect, EU-SCORES, or SmartGlow, as well as collaborative projects with industrial partners. “The visit of companies, in this case one of the major entities operating in the Japanese electricity sector, allows us to share our skills and knowledge, as well as our technological solutions. The fact that we can demonstrate our competencies through our research infrastructures showcases our ability to transform science into transferable innovation for the business sector, which naturally leverages collaboration opportunities in energy transition”, explained Luís Seca, member of the Executive Board at INESC TEC.
CEPCO is a utility company located in the Chubu region of Japan, with more than 70 years; it’s responsible for ensuring the supply of electricity to the central region of the country, including metropolitan areas like Nagoya. In addition to the activities related to the power generation, transmission and distribution, the company has been involved in initiatives to promote efficiency and sustainability in the Japanese electricity sector.
It’s worth mentioning that INESC TEC’s record of cooperation with Japan is quite significant; the institution collaborates with the National Institute of Informatics (NII), the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), RIKEN, and the National Institute of Information and Communications (NIICT) – which enables the exchange of researchers, the development of joint projects with associated scientific publications, or the sharing of knowledge through participation in transnational collaborative networks like the CENTRA network – Collaborations to Enable Transnational Cyberinfrastructure Applications.
