José Manuel Mendonça chairs the new National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation

Nominated to lead the Government’s new advisory body for the areas of science, technology and innovation, the Chairman of the Board of INESC TEC and Professor at FEUP highlights “the great responsibility and the challenge of engaging relevant individual and collective actors in the scientific and technological system, as well as in the business environment, thus contributing to public policies in the fields of science and innovation”.

The National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CNCTI) was created in February 2021, in order to develop, reinforce and support the National Scientific and Technological System, ensuring scientific advice and fostering cross-cutting and inter-ministerial dialogue on science policies, technology and innovation.

This new advisory body will work in close liaison with the Minister of State for the Economy and Digital Transition, Pedro Siza Vieira, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, also collaborating in parliamentary debates on science, technology and innovation, whenever requested by the Assembly of the Republic.

The first plenary meeting of the CNCTI will take place on March 1, with the presidents of FCT, ANI and IAPMEI, as well as 20 renowned individuals in different fields of knowledge and economics, including academic, scientific and business leaders from diverse institutional and regional backgrounds – among which stand out other members of INESC TEC associated institutions, such as Isabel Sousa Pinto (U.Porto / FCUP and CIMAR), João Barros (U.Porto/FEUP, IT and Veniam), Joana Palha (UMinho/ICVS), and Arlindo Oliveira (IST-U Lisboa and INESC).
