Online session analyses artificial intelligence in food retail in Portugal

Alípio Jorge, coordinator of INESC TEC’s Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Laboratory (LIAAD), organised the first session of the FórumIA, an online event to present and explore the developments of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Portugal; the event took place within the scope of the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence: AI Portugal 2030.

Artificial Intelligence can be applied to various domains, such as public administration, education, training and businesses. The first of a series of online sessions took place on February 11, and focused on the food retail sector. The panel composed of representatives from SONAE, Jerónimo Martins, Agência Nacional de Inovação, among others, discussed the results achieved, the challenges that large and small companies in the sector face while applying AI, and the current existing support.

As coordinator of the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence: AI Portugal 2030, Alípio Jorge highlighted the importance of promoting research and innovation in this area. “Development, economic growth, and improving people’s lives – that should be Artificial Intelligence’s contribution to society, improving our lives”, explained the researcher.
