Three telecommunications projects presented in the United States

INESC TEC was invited to travel to Rice University, in the U.S.A., to present and disseminate the work that has been developed within the scope of three telecommunications projects. In addition to promoting the impact of said projects – two of them led by INESC TEC -, this was an opportunity to reinforce INESC TEC’s status in the country, deepening mutual knowledge about the research taking place at both institutions, and to announce the beginning of new joint initiatives (e.g., organisation of workshops).

The three projects addressed were CONVERGE – Telecommunications and computer vision convergence tools for research infrastructures, TERRAMETA – Terahertz reconfigurable metasurfaces for ultra-high-rate wireless communications, and SUPERIOT – Truly sustainable printed electronics-based IoT combining optical and radio wireless technologies, the first two led by INESC TEC.

Luís Pessoa, researcher at INESC TEC, in the field of Telecommunications and Multimedia, and coordinator of the projects CONVERGE and TERRAMETA, represented the institution during this trip. “The visit to the laboratories and the discussion with several professors and PhD students was very productive. Rice University is already a partner of the CONVERGE project; but a lot of interest has been shown in the topics we are exploring in the TERRAMETA project”, he said.

As a result of this visit, both entities defined another collaboration opportunity: a workshop dedicated to improving cooperation between Europe and the United States of America in the field of research infrastructures. This workshop, whose proposal was led by the CTM, was accepted at the EuCNC & 6G Summit 2024 conference, which will take place in Antwerp, Belgium (June 3-6).

During the visit, which took place on February 7, Luís Pessoa was also responsible for teaching the seminar “Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Towards Ubiquitous Communications and Sensing”; besides showcasing the projects and the work carried out thus far, the researcher presented INESC TEC, and the Institute’s organisation and infrastructures.

The delegation that hosted INESC TEC featured several professors from Rice University, namely Edward Knightly, Joseph Cavallaro, Rahman Doost and Taiyun Chi.

The researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with INESC TEC.
