The goal of the «Digital Agro-food & Forestry (r)evolution» congress, held on 12 and 13 December at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), was to address the technology and innovation in the development of the agri-food and forestry sectors, in an event jointly organised by CITAB (Centre for the Research and Technology of Agro-Environmental and Biological Sciences) and INESC TEC.
National and foreign speakers presented the latest innovations and technologies that are important for the development of the sectors in a scenario of climate changes and of constant evolution in the consumption trends.
The following topics were addressed at UTAD’s Auditorium: precision agriculture, Internet of Things and Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, robotics and remote sensors, technologies for sustainable viticulture, forest monitoring systems, digital platform for obesity control, among others.
Researchers from CITAB and INESC TEC participated in the congress, and the institute focused its presentations on the so-called smart precision viticulture, taking advantage of digital technologies.
The keynote speakers of the event were: Cristina Garcia Viguera, a researcher of the Spanish Research Council Institute CEBAS-CSIC; Sigfredo Fuentes, a Professor of Digital Agriculture, Food and Wine Sciences at the University of Melbourne; Alexandra Marques, a researcher of INESC TEC, and Rui Soares, viticulture manager at Real Companhia Velha.
Throughout the four sessions of the event, there was an opportunity for several discussions between researchers, managers and producers. It should be noted that it was precisely with the intention of incorporating «other entities for the innovation ecosystem» that a collaboration protocol was established between CITAB and INESC TEC, as mentioned by André Sá, responsible for the innovation area Tec4agro-food of INESC TEC for Agri-Food and Forestry.
The event ended with a guided tour to Quinta das Carvalhas, in Pinhão.
