INESC TEC’s Augmented Video 360 (AV360) technology is at the basis of the “Rohingya” video, which will be present at the Adventure Film Festival, taking place in the Municipal Market of Matosinhos between 12 and 15 September.
Resulting from a joint initiative with Samsung, the festival’s virtual reality space will have the continuous broadcast of the 360º video “Rohingya”, produced by journalists Octávio Costa and Rui Batista, on the penultimate day, 14 September at 10:00 am. Shot in the former second largest jungle of Bangladesh and the world’s current largest refugee camp, the pair of journalists portray the Rohingyas’ history. Through the virtual reality component of the glasses, a distant reality will be introduced, thus contributing to the increase of the spectators’ critical spirit as well.
The AV360 platform, which was developed by the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG) and funded by the Google Digital News Initiative, enables the creation and visualisation of augmented 360º videos with dynamic annotations. In addition to making the platform available, the team of INESC TEC’s Computer Graphics, Interaction and Gaming Laboratory provided support for its use and adaptation. The project was coordinated by Rui Rodrigues and Rui Nóbrega, the development was conducted by Teresa Matos and Filipe Rodrigues and José Barboza and Marisa Pinheiro were responsible for the edition/ design.
During the day, the event will have a unique meeting point and a sharing environment among travellers, explorers and onlookers. On the other hand, the night will be exclusively dedicated to film screening. Besides the cinematographic component, the festival’s programme integrates photographic exhibitions, conferences, workshops, celebrations and discussions, among other activities.
