INESC TEC concluded a project dedicated to sports practice

INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) concluded the Tennis Video Sports AI project, promoted in partnership with AppGeneration. The main objective was to raise awareness of the importance of sports, while contributing to improve the performance of tennis players.

More specifically, CTM supported the development of the Tennis Tracking AI application, being responsible for the image processing, computer vision and artificial intelligence elements, with AppGeneration developing the front-end and system management. The application was launched in 2020, and it has been improved over the last few months; it is available for download on the AppStore.

“With this application, we aim to increase the zest for tennis, and improve people’s participation in physical activity. Although the official launching of the application was delayed, due to the pandemic and the lockdown, it is clear that the application can help overcome the negative consequences of these complex times”, said Eduardo Carqueja, CEO of AppGeneration.

“Concerning the latest versions of the app, we added focused new features, but mainly focused on improving the automation of the image acquisition process, so users find it as flexible and transparent as possible. We would like users to further appreciate and enjoy playing tennis, using this application to improve their experience, even when competing amicably with their friends”, said Pedro Carvalho, project manager and senior researcher at CTM.

The Norte’s Regional Operational Programme, Portugal 2020 and the European Union – through the European Regional Development Fund – were the entities responsible for funding the Tennis Video Sports AI project.
