INESC TEC develops sensors for disease diagnosis and quality monitoring of productivity in the agricultural sector

INESC TEC is one of the entities involved in the project “Smart Farm 4.0: smart solutions for sustainable, predictive and autonomous agriculture”, whose main objective is the development of innovative and accessible solutions – based on industry 4.0 (Internet of Things – IoT, artificial intelligence, big data, cyber-physical systems, and autonomous robots) – for application in the agricultural sector.

The new solutions aim to optimise the use of resources, the sustainability and resilience of agricultural systems and their profitability, contributing to a smarter, more autonomous, and digital agriculture, in order to maximise the added value of national horticulture, fruit and viticulture products, with an emphasis on the western region of Portugal.

The project involves INESC TEC’s Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP) and the Centre for Robotics in Industry and Intelligent Systems (CRIIS), in charge of developing low-cost proximity technologies, namely sensors for the timely diagnosis of diseases and nutritional deficiencies in plants.

The €3.5M project is co-financed by the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), through the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation and the Lisbon’s Regional Operational Programme. The project comprehends 16 partners, including universities, laboratories, entities dedicated to technological innovation and development, and agricultural production entities; it is led by Tomix and coordinated by Smart Farm Colab. Smart Farm 4.0 will last until 2023.
