INESC TEC project allows reducing costs in professional audio-visual production

The CHIC project – Cooperative Holistic View on Internet and Content, the largest national R&D project in the media sector, enables the reduction of costs associated with professional audio-visual production – as done in television studies, for instance.

This project focused on the development of a solution capable of automating the operations carried out at professional audio-visual production studios, resorting to ordinary computers, tools used in data communication networks (IP-based), and Information Technologies (IT).

In particular, the innovative solution developed allows the installation of an audio-visual content production unit operated remotely, which requires ordinary computers connected to an IP network, where the professionals can install the software developed in the project, instead of using dedicated and costly – as is the case of television production studios. In addition, this solution does not require human resources specialised in IP or IT, since the entire configuration process is automated through an intuitive and friendly Web interface, remotely and via the Internet.

These results, together with approaches developed to ensure the quality of service in terms of bandwidth, latency and synchronism between media, present themselves as a major evolution in the production of high quality audio-visual content. They allow obtaining a solution with reduced costs, introducing the concepts of Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud computing, in professional audio-visual production environments.

The INESC TEC and FEUP team included researchers from INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), namely Tiago Costa and Soheila Golestani, with Teresa Andrade as the coordinator.

“This project is a decisive step towards the democratisation of the production of high quality audio-visual content. Thanks to the project’s results, a larger number of small broadcasters and local television stations will be able to focus on quality production, even considering lower budgets. This will have a significant impact on the end users, who will benefit from more and better content than the one provided today”, said Teresa Andrade.

It is important to mention that the team of researchers mentioned above, together with the MOG Technologies team (the entity in charge of coordinating the project), also wrote a scientific article focused on the work developed within the scope of activity C1 – presented in December 2020, at the TRON Symposium.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UP-FEUP.
