INESC TEC researcher acknowledged in the New Talents in Quantum Technologies programme

INESC TEC researcher Gilberto Cunha received a grant from the New Talents in Quantum Technologies programme, an initiative promoted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

According to the researcher at INESC TEC’s High-assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab), currently developing his thesis “Quantum Bayesian Reinforcement Learning” as a student of the Master’s in Physical Engineering by the University of Minho, the awarded project focuses on computing and artificial intelligence to verify if there are advantages in using quantum computing for certain AI-related problems.

More specifically, this work will try to find advantages in applying quantum computing in Bayesian models in terms of reinforcement learning, a domain of Artificial Intelligence. Furthermore, “this project will also include experimental tests to verify these advantages, making the study more robust and well-founded”, said Gilberto Cunha.

The New Scientific Talent grants support the talent, research ability and scientific innovation of students in Portuguese higher education institutions. It is important to mention that said grants also favour the pursuit of studies and activities considered relevant to the development of the grant holder’s aptitude.

“This acknowledgement is quite important, at an academic level, but also at a personal level”, stated the researcher, who is already the fourth student of the aforementioned Master’s, and the third HASLab member to receive this grant over the past three years.

The INESC TEC researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with INESC TEC and UMinho.
