INESC TEC researchers reach the podium in the World Data League

A team from INESC TEC won the second place in the final of the World Data League (WDL) marathon/datathon, which took place between July 2 and 4. The team presented a solution that would allow the City of Turin (Italy) to predict the noise level throughout several days, while detecting the likelihood of a noise-related complaint – enabling the city’s public management bodies to make informed decisions and optimise their processes, in order to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants.

The Tech Moguls team included three researchers from INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) – Tiago Gonçalves, Tomé Albuquerque and Joana Morgado – and a data scientist from NILG.AI – Paulo Maia, former member of INESC TEC’s Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER).

The team managed to overcome the four stages of the competition, during which they sought to address certain challenges and present the most suitable solutions, subsequently submitting all the implementation steps (code and data analysis), as well as the necessary theoretical, social and financial elements, in order to achieve a robust and workable solution – accompanied by a one-minute video/pitch.

“Since we’re passionate about problem solving, we consider that our participation in the WDL was a great experience, allowing us to put our knowledge and willingness to learn to the test, always bearing in mind a goal with significant potential of generating a positive impact on people’s lives. These working weeks were very fun, and we were able to explore teamwork and remind ourselves of how important it is to learn about topics that are not always part of our daily lives. The second place is a recognition of all the effort we put into the solutions we submitted. By publishing them as open source, we hope they can be used by civil society to generate value in people’s lives”, said Tiago Gonçalves, researcher at CTM.

In order to reach the final, the team composed of researchers from INESC TEC competed with other 49 teams, with participants from 34 countries, reaching the second place after an evaluation by a jury made up of experts in the field of data science.

The World Data League is a platform dedicated to data science and the development of solutions with great societal impact, promoting the creation of online and offline communities and the organisation of events for experts in the field.

All solutions developed within the scope of this competition are available here.
