INESC TEC researchers reached the top-3 at university programming marathon

Luís Pereira, Rui Pedro Oliveira and Tiago Pereira won third place in the Inter-University Programming Marathon, after solving six of the 11 problems presented to them in five hours. Participating in an international competition is the new challenge of CatamorfismUM, the name of the team composed of INESC TEC researchers.

A team of INESC TEC researchers won the third place in the Inter-University Programming Marathon (MIUP), a programming competition dedicated to university students who seek to test their problem-solving skills. The initiative, promoted by the University of Coimbra, also aims to promote socialising and networking between students and teachers.

For the competition, the students organised themselves into teams of three, and programmed for five hoursusing C, C++, Java or Phyton 3. Concerning UM Catamorfismum, the team featuring Luís Pereira, Rui Oliveira and Tiago Pereira, researchers at INESC TEC High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab), they were able to solve all problems (six out of a total of 11) using the C++ language.

This initiative stemmed from an invitation by a professor, who knew that the three researchers already participated in similar events. “However, we did not expect this positive result; after the MIUP, we realised that we were better prepared that we thought”, mentioned Luís Manuel Pereira.

Considering the performance and the result achieved, the group has already established a new objective: to participate in the Southwestern Europe Regional Contest (SWERC), a competition that brings together the best universities in Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Israel, within the scope of the International Collegiate Programming Contest. The goal is to “prove the group’s competences internationally“.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UMinho.
