INESC TEC strengthens relations with Japan in the field of advanced computing

INESC TEC strengthened its relationship with Asia by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RIKEN (Japan), through the Center for Computational Science (R-CCS). The collaboration aims to promote activities focusing on energy efficiency of the advanced computing operational centres that host the Fugaku and Deucalion supercomputers, contributing to position the two organisations at the forefront of green supercomputing.

The MoU was signed in the city of Kobe, Japan, on December 13, as part of a meeting with the Fugaku supercomputer operations team. “The Fugaku supercomputer is simultaneously the greenest and second fastest in the world; Deucalion will be one of the first green supercomputers in the EuroHPC network”, stated Rui Oliveira, member of the Board of Directors at INESC TEC. “This MoU establishes collaborative actions towards promoting the energy efficiency of the advanced computing operational centres that host Fugaku and Deucalion, seeking to position the two partners at the forefront of green supercomputing, favouring carbon neutrality”, explained Rui Oliveira.

This collaboration with Asia was also reinforced through the presentation on Sustainable HPC in the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) of NARLabs, within the scope of the workshop 2022 Cyberinfrastructure and HPC – Challenges and Opportunities for the Post-Pandemic Era – which also included the participation of the CENTRA network, to which INESC TEC belongs.

During this visit, Rui Oliveira also met with the president of the National Institute of Informatics (NII), Masaru Kitsuregawa, who is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of INESC TEC. In addition, and regarding the NII International Internship Programme, Rui Oliveira also visited three researchers from INESC TEC’s High-assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) who are carrying out their internship at the NII.

It’s worth mentioning that, on November 30, INESC TEC welcomed a NARLabs delegation, an entity that keeps a close partnership and relationship with the Institute, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding that focuses on cooperation in Advanced Computing and Research and Ocean Technologies.

The INESC TEC researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with UMinho.
