José Carlos Príncipe acknowledged by the world’s largest general scientific society

José Carlos Príncipe, former chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), received the title of Fellow by the AAASAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science, as a recognition of his relevant contribution to the field of statistical signal processing – namely by incorporating information theory and applying kernel functions to computational neuroscience.

The AAAS Fellows are a distinguished group of scientists, engineers, and researchers, acknowledged for their achievements in several areas: from research, teaching and technology to excellence in communicating and interpreting science to the public.

In 2021, 564 scientists, engineers and researchers from 24 scientific areas were distinguished. This nomination is a lifetime honour.

About José Carlos Principe

José Carlos Príncipe is professor of electrical and biomedical engineering at the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. He began his career at the University of Florida (UF) in 1987, focusing on computer technology applied to medical questions, like brain-machine interfaces or mathematical structures that represent cognitive processes. José Carlos Príncipe is a leader in the Artificial Intelligence initiative at UF, while former director of the Center for Big Learning, whose mission is to “explore and advance the frontiers of large-scale emerging deep learning research”, in collaboration with industry, and train the next generation of scientists.

Príncipe also coordinated INESC TEC’s International Scientific Advisory Board and works as Visiting Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.

José Carlos Príncipe is considered one of the world leaders in the field of Computational Neuroengineering, with 38 patents, five books, 14 book chapters in specialised publications and more than 800 articles published in journals and conferences. He supervised 102 PhD and approximately 60 master’s degree students.
