Science and Nature highlighted at the European Researchers’ Night 2020

Despite the current public health constraints, INESC TEC was once again present at the European Researchers’ Night, this year with a reduced number of face-to-face activities, and a complementary programme completely online.

Dedicated to the theme “Science and Nature” and the sub-theme “Preservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage”, the event’s main objective was to bring scientific research closer to citizens, especially younger people. The activities carried out in person took place in Lisbon, on November 27, with the participation of the entire audience through digital media.

Similar to previous editions, INESC TEC submitted proposals for scientific activities, thus disclosing two of its many projects.

“How to promote the bioeconomy and the circular economy” was the title of the activity to promote the BIOTECFOR project, which aims to increase the level of efficiency in the use of forest resources. Using intelligent robotic systems for collecting and processing biomass, and looking for new applications for new materials, BIOTECFOR disseminates the bioeconomy and the circular economy in Northern Portugal and Galicia. Reinaldo Gomes, Jorge Cunha e Carolina Catorze, researchers at the Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering (CESE), were responsible for presenting the project.

In order to present the INFRAVINI project, the team led by Lino Oliveira, a researcher at the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG), prepared a promotional video, addressing the subject “The wine sector’s challenge of adapting to climate change”. The project focuses on developing a platform with climatic and agronomic indicators that will allow winegrowers, working on any area of any Wine Region, to benefit from the interconnection and normalisation of local sensory and climatic information collected at an “observatory”.

This year, the consortium responsible for organising the event included the National Museum of Natural History and Science, the University of Lisbon (MUHNAC-ULisboa), the School of Sciences of the University of Minho, the Faculty of Science and Technology/Nova. ID.FCT of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, the University of Évora, the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE), the Lisbon City Council and the Estoril Higher Institute for Tourism and Hotel Studies.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC.
