Test Bed 5G: INESC TEC joins consortium to support startups and SMEs in the development of 5G products and services

Led by NOS, and co-promoted by Sonae MC and Wells, the consortium features INESC TEC participation, aiming to boost the digital transformation of start-ups and SMEs, supporting them in the development of products and services resorting to the latest generation of networks. Over the next three years, the Test Bed 5G – framed within the scope of the National TestBed Network – will support the development of 165 pilots; INESC TEC will facilitate the testing of solutions aimed at the manufacturing industry.

With an investment of €8M, the 5G Test Bed will help companies develop products and services resorting to 5G, in major areas of the national economy: Industry, Retail, Healthcare, Smart Cities and Sustainability. The goal is to support 165 pilots and, consequently, facilitate the transformation of technology into solutions that can be commercialised.

“INESC TEC, through its Industry and Innovation Laboratory (iiLab), will facilitate and monitor the development of a set of software and equipment pilots in a quasi-industrial context. These products will be developed to fully exploit the capabilities of 5G networks for the manufacturing industry”, explained António Almeida, Business Developer of INESC TEC TEC4Industry.

INESC TEC (exploring the technological knowledge in 5G and technologies that facilitate Industry 4.0, as well as in the industrial domain) will test technologies/products in order to improve their features through 5G networks.

Mobile robots – autonomous forklifts – with assisted driving by operators in control rooms, using virtual reality environments; a digital twin platform of the factory floor to collect and process more data with lower latency; or augmented reality glasses with processing done in the cloud and not in the glasses themselves, in order to reduce the energy consumption of their batteries – these are some of the products demonstrated at iiLab.

“To do this, we will invite startups and SMEs to develop and test their products on 5G networks. At iiLab, in addition to a private 5G infrastructure, we provide a quasi-real environment with production machines and logistics equipment, which simulate a context close to reality. This is where we will test and demonstrate these products”, mentioned António Almeida, also stating that companies can already express their interest in participating in the Test Bed, by contacting NOS or INESC TEC TEC4Industry.

The Test Bed 5G is a consortium composed of NOS, Sonae MC, and Wells, with the participation of CEIIA, INESC TEC and Ericsson – covering six locations nationwide, in Lisbon, Porto, Maia and Matosinhos.
