INESC TEC researchers awarded at the International Conference on Biometrics

Ana Rebelo and Filipa Sequeira were recently awarded the Best Reviewer Award, after a conference that took place in October. The conference’s council grants this award to researchers who stand out in the process of reviewing papers.

The International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2020) is the largest international conference in the field. Ana Rebelo and Filipa Sequeira, researchers at the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), were part of the reviewers’ committee, and were also in charge of reviewing papers. Out of the 177 reviewers, only 17 researchers were selected – among them, the INESC TEC researchers, who were surprised by the award:

“The criteria are not disclosed, and we didn’t even know (about this award). I think this is an innovative initiative, important to acknowledge the people who review papers assigned to them, complying with deadlines and justifying their decisions”, said Filipa Sequeira.

Reviewing papers is an integral part of the scientific process and, according to Ana Rebelo, one ought to do it attentively: “While reviewing papers, I try my best to criticise them, so that authors understand that I’m actually judging their work, rather than themselves. We criticise the papers in a constructive and positive way, so that authors can submit their work to this or other conferences”.

The International Joint Conference on Biometrics is organised by the IEEE Biometrics Council and the Technical Committee on Biometrics of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR TC-4). The event took place in October, and brought together academics from around the world, experts in different fields: from pharmaceuticals to artificial intelligence, and even data privacy. Both researchers keep developing their work in different areas of biometrics, at INESC TEC.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC.
